World recognition to 'Shadi Online'
TV TalkGeo TV's top-listed show

'Shadi Online' - Geo TV's top-listed show these days, is at the core, an attempt to rid the people of seemingly incurable problem of finding the perfect match. The programme wasn't being expected to turn out this successful. There were mixed reactions about the programme. On one hand, it was a prophecy that it will only turn out to be an outlet for evil in the society and would barely prove a source of moral deterioration that we already don't lack. While on the other, a huge number of people welcomed the idea and took it as a decent opportunity to look for proper match. All fears were proven wrong when the show took the masses by storm. It stands as a unique programme, at least in the region. Even the international media has failed to ignore its popularity and efficacy.

Lately, San Francisco Chronicle acknowledged the wonderful job this programme has done within this very short span of time since it has been going on-air. They have put it as: "The institution of marriage is a serious business in Pakistan. More than 90 % matches are arranged and marrying for love is still widely frowned upon."

"Weddings do not occur before an arduous journey, during which families examine the heritage, education, piety, class and outlook of the candidates for compatibly. The potential couple is allowed little contact - in order to protect everyone's honor - until some agreement between the families is reached."

"Like a few web-sites, this show is also allowing young people the opportunity to expand their search for a mate and interact with others in their country or around the world without violating their cultural norms."

Praising the courage to fight against the odds of the society, the SF Chronicle puts it as: "While Pakistan's outspoken conservative clerics have widened their influence since the events of Sept. 11, 'Shadi Online' has escaped their ire."

Adding the comments of the show's director Shaqielle Khan, "A few individuals have objected to women coming on national television and stating their demands for a husband. But there have been no major complaints and we are trying hard to keep setting a positive example."

Commenting on the kind of feedback, he says: "Viewer's response has been amazing. People just send messages to congratulate us and it goes to prove that our nation really is a sentimental bunch when it comes to love, and when done right, a show like this has mass appeal."
